Released by HarperCollins Español, «Velorio» is the first novel by Puerto Rican writer Xavier Navarro Aquino. Realism and fantasy come together in a story that takes place in the days after the terrible passage of Hurricane Maria through Puerto Rico, in 2017. It is available on Amazon and all platforms, in Spanish and English, from January 4. «‘Velorio’ is a testament to the resilience, triumphs and tribulations of a family, an island and its people,» says the prestigious American author Víctor LaValle. «Velorio» tells the fictional story of young survivors of the devastating hurricane – it left thousands dead – who establish an independent society in a mountainous town and suffer from an authoritarian leader. Xavier Navarro Aquino is a professor in the English master’s program at the University of Notre Dame. He studied at the University of Puerto Rico, and at Nebraska-Lincoln. The writer was born and raised in Puerto Rico. His works have been published in the literary magazines Tin House, McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern and Guernica. He has received numerous scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Sewanee Writers’ Conference and the prestigious MacDowell Fellowship. It is recommended by Publishers Weekly magazine. HarperCollins Español is one of the most important Spanish-speaking publishers in the United States and offers its readers a varied selection of the most outstanding books and the most talented authors. According to Justin Torres, bestselling author of «We The Animals,» in «Velorio» Navarro Aquino «takes us on a fascinating and heartbreaking journey through the post-hurricane period, where natural violence is intensified by capitalist destruction; where the dead persecute the living, where impossible decisions are made and where futures are born, in principle, unthinkable.»
